Ireland is thinking of making the switch to right-hand driving

February 15, 2008 · Filed Under Travel news · Comment

Last week there was a news story about a debate regarding driving going on in Ireland.

Apparently there is some debate about making the switch to right-hand driving in Ireland. This is being considered as the tourist numbers in Ireland are swelling and it seems that the vast majority of tourists have trouble driving in Ireland.

Besides Ireland, there are only a few countries that drive on the left. Most of these are British Colonies. The most notable places other than Ireland where driving is on the left is Australia and Japan.

British Antique Dealers’ Association Antiques and Fine Art Fair in London

February 14, 2008 · Filed Under London · Comment

The British Antique Dealers’ Association (BADA) Fair is an annual showcase of quality antiques held for seven days in Chelsea’s Duke of York’s Headquarters. Furniture, paintings and more are all on show and on sale to the public.

The series of informal talks and events given by members is a highlight of the event. It would not be complete without its glittering Charity Gala, culminating in an auction with proceeds going to ChildLine. Since it was launched in 1986, ChildLine has counselled more than 1.5 million children, and found help for abused children.

The pavilion comes complete with an a la carte restaurant and champagne bar, as well as on-site shippers to assist with the packing and delivery of any precious purchases.
When: March 5–11, 2008
Where: Duke of York’s Headquarters, The Duke of York Square, Chelsea, London SW3
Cost: Single ticket £10; double £15 (includes BADA Annual Handbook and re-entry pass); Gala tickets £45
Opening Hours: Wed 11 a.m.–9 p.m.; Thu 11 a.m.–5.30 p.m.; Fri 11 a.m.–8 p.m.; Sat–Sun 11 a.m.–6 p.m.; Mon 11 a.m.–8 p.m.; Tue 11 a.m.–6 p.m.

British Airways new carbon offset program

February 12, 2008 · Filed Under Travel news · Comment

British Airways has unveiled an upgraded carbon offset program with funding to support deforestation prevention.

The new offset program makes use of UN-certified emissions reductions to help finance new initiatives in developing countries such as clean energy projects in China and Brazil. It allows customers to buy their offset in one transaction. When you book your flight at ba.com, you can choose to pay directly into the fund and reduce your carbon footprint.

In addition to the offset program, British Airways will invest in a range of deforestation prevention projects in Brazil. We are striving to effectively combat one of the largest sources of greenhouse gasses.

A lawsuit over airport search and seizure of laptops and other items

February 12, 2008 · Filed Under Travel news · Comment

Last week the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Asian Law Caucus filed a lawsuit that accuses customs agents of “lengthy questioning and intrusive searches” and seeks clarification on the law that allows such searches. In some cases items have actually been kept and never returned to the travelers.

The Customs and Border Protection defends the searches. They even go so far as to say the agency does not need to show probable cause to look inside suitcases or laptops. (Personally I find that outrageous.)

Even more outrageous is the response from the TSA.

A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security equates searches of electronic devices to those of papers in briefcases.

“You forgo your right to privacy when you are seeking admission into the country,” he says. “This is the kind of scrutiny the American public expects.”

London’s Camden Market on Fire

February 9, 2008 · Filed Under Travel news · Comment

One of my favorite places to visit in London is the famous Camden Town Market. Sadly the Camden Market is currently on fire. The fire broke out today in one of the stalls and four hours later is still going strong. Buildings have been evacuated and so far no one has been hurt in the blaze.

The well known Hawley Arms pub is one of the causalities in the fire. Here’s hoping we don’t lose all of the Camden Market in this fire.
