Amsterdam to be World Book Capital 2008
Amsterdam is set to be the World Book Capital for 2008. The year long title (celebration?) lasts from April 23, 2008 to April 22, 2009.
The title is granted by UNESCO. This just reaffirms Amsterdam’s international reputation as a place of refuge for free speech and the written word.
There will be many events going on as a result of this. The World Book Market is one to note. You can find it in Amsterdam on May 18, 2008.
For more info on this and other World Book Capital festivities and news, check out the Amsterdam World Book Capital website.
Easy Transportation from LAX
If you are flying into LAX and will be spending some time in Los Angeles, getting from the airport can be a bit of a chore. Mostly this is because the airport is located in the Long Beach area and most people do not end up spending their vacation in that part of Los Angeles.
If you are looking for cheap public transportation options, you best bet is the public bus service. There are free 24-hour shuttle buses (look for the “C” line; lines “A” and “B” serve only the parking lots) that connect with the LAX Transit Center, which is where you can pick up local buses.
If you want a bit more luxury and do not want a cab ride, then look for a minibus. They offer the most convenient way into the city. Look for LAX Chequer Shuttle (800-545-7745) or SuperShuttle (800-554-3146, supershuttle.com), which run to downtown, Hollywood, West L.A. and Santa Monica and have signs on their windshield advertising their general destination. Fares vary depending on your destination, but are generally around $25-$30 (plus tip). The shuttles run around the clock from outside the baggage reclaim areas (you shouldn’t have to wait more than 20 minutes); pay the fare when you board. Journey times average around 30 to 45 minutes.
Tips on saving money in Paris
Will you be finding yourself visiting Paris, France soon? Well, if you are from the US and working with the horrible exchange rate, you may be looking for ways to cut costs while in Paris. And even if you are not looking for ways to cut costs while on holiday in Paris, you still might benefit from these money savings tips for any tourist in France.
- Instead of buying breakfast out in a cafe, why not pick up your breakfast at a boulangerie and enjoy it from your hotel room or even in a park if the weather is nice out.
- Look for happy hour specials on chalkboard outside of restaurants and cafes to save on a drink before dinner.
- If you want to skip an expensive beverage with your meal, ask for “une carafe d’eau” to get a pitcher of tap water.
- Skip the expensive tourist cruises down the Seine and instead walk along the Seine.
- Don’t overlook the food from cheap street vendors. Many locals eat from these and you can save money by doing so too.
- There always seem to be free concerts going on in Paris. Check out Colleen’s Paris to get info on any free concerts happening while you are in Paris.
- Paris is a walking city - if weather permits, save that train fare by walking through Paris.
National Railway Museum in York, England
The National Railway Museum in York, England is a great place to visit if you find yourself in York. And best of all, it is free! Unless of course there is a special event and then you will probably have to pay some sort of admission. The National Railway Museum is within walking distance of the York Train Station. If you arrive straight from the train station and are hungry you have a few food options. You can eat at Brief Encounter, which is the licensed restaurant at the National Railway Museum. It serves full meals and light snacks and can be found in the Station Hall. If you just want a quick snack then you will want to check out the Signal Box Cafe in the Main Hall. And during the holiday season there is a Barbecue in the South Yard.
The National Railway Museum in York is the world’s largest railway museum.
While at the National Railway Museum, you will not want to miss the Yorkshire Wheel. Think of it as York’s version of the London Eye. The ride lasts for 13 minutes and will take you round 3 times. What is really cool about the Yorkshire Wheel is that the pods are air conditioned in the summer and heated in the winter. You will really not want to miss the view of York from this! You can fit up to 8 people in a pod. And there is an admission fee for this one. It is £6 for adults and £4 for children ages 4 - 12, under 4 is free.
