Seneca Caverns - Largest caverns in West Virginia

May 17, 2008 · Filed Under United States

Seneca Caverns features subterranean rooms chock full of stalagmites, stalactites, flowstone and calcite crystal. These wonders make up Seneca Caverns, which are the largest caverns in West Virginia.

The Seneca Caverns are named after the Seneca Indians, who used the caverns for things like ceremonial rituals as well as refuge from the elements. Tours of these caverns actually began in the late 1920’s and now go on most of the year. Tours last from about 45 minutes to an hour. And like all caves, the year round temperature is around 55 degrees, so make sure to bring a light jacket if you visit.

The caverns at Seneca Caverns go down as far as 165 feet below ground. When you tour the caverns a guide will lead you on a 3/4 mile trek past flowstone, which looks like a creamy rock waterfall, the underground pool called Mirror Lake, a 60 feet long, 30 feet wide and 70 feet high room called the Grand Ballroom and so much more.
