July 4th in NYC: from fireworks to hot dog eating contest

Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks
If you are spending Independence Day in the Big Apple and want to know what you can do, there will be a lot of things for you to choose from.

If fireworks are your thing, you will want to know about the much anticipated Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks. At around 9 p.m., Macy’s will have fireworks being released from 3 separate locations around the city. The locations are:

  • East River in Midtown
    Fireworks will be launched from the East River just off 34th Street.
  • South Street Seaport
  • Liberty State Park
    Note that this is actually located in Jersey City.

If you don’t mind spending $20, you can check out the Roosevelt Island July 4th Fireworks Festival 2008. For more info, visit their website.

Nathan’s on Coney Island will play host to the infamous Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest. You can usually catch this on ESPN as well. So, if watching people stuff themselves with hot dogs is your thing, you won’t want to miss this. You can watch it in person, but it is suggested that you arrive by 11:00 AM for the best viewing spots.

And at the Battery Park 4th of July Concert you can catch Sonic Youth this year. The performance is free and starts at 3:30 PM. You do need tickets to this free event, get them here. Be sure to hang around for a great view of the Macy’s Fireworks from the South Street Seaport at 9:00 PM.
