Looking for things to do in New York City for New Year’s Eve. If Times Square is not your thing have a look at these events in Manhattan for New Year’s Eve.

Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine

Reserve your tickets ASAP for the landmark cathedral’s Concert for Peace by calling (866) 811-4111, or arrive early for free general admission. The show starts at 7pm.

New Year’s Midnight Run
Get 2009 started on the right foot by participating in the first sporting event of the year.

New Year’s Eve Cruise
Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises offers four, three-hour cruises departing from Pier 83. All include an open bar, hors d’oeuvres, DJs, party favors and a midnight champagne toast ($120; 10pm-1am).

New Year’s Eve Fireworks
The not-to-be-missed annual fireworks show erupts over Grand Army Plaza at midnight. The festivities officially begin at 11pm, but come early and dress warm. For more info, call (718) 965-8999.

Jivamukti’s 20th Annual Silent New Year’s Eve Celebration
Drunken revelers in Times Square not your idea of a good time? Celebrate New Year’s with silent meditation, midnight chanting and vegan chai instead (Jivamukti Yoga School; 9pm).

Spend NYE at MSG, where the modern rockers (known for their live performance skills) prove their worth on stage with songs from four critically acclaimed studio albums. The show is being dubbed a “Blacktie Blowout,” so be sure to dress to the nines in something frilly.

Live Comedy on New Year’s Eve
Ring in the new year with laughter at this not-to-be-missed comedy spectacular, hosted by Seena Jon, Dan Upham and Ben Kissel. The show will feature sketch comedy courtesy of Murderfist, The Ultimate Experts and Rue Brutalia, plus stand-up from a variety of comics including Mike Dobbins and Sean Patton. Never heard of them? Who cares–there’s also free beer (Dec 31 at Under St. Marks; $25 in advance, $30 at the door).

Miami Beach New Year’s Eve Party
On the beach near Ocean Drive and 8th St.
The city of Miami Beach offers a free fireworks celebration at midnight.

Bayfront Park Amphitheater
301 North Biscayne Blvd, Miami
This free even features live performances by various bands. There’s a countdown at midnight for the dropping of the Big Orange, followed by fireworks.

NYE09 at Area with ROBIN THICKE

The NYE party features a New Years Eve countdown and live performance at midnight by Interscopes multi-platinum selling superstar, ROBIN THICKE.

Tatou Los Angeles
333 S. Boylston St., Los Angeles
This NYE party is hosted by Taboo of the Black Eye Peas. He will also be performing.

Giant Maximus New Year’s Eve 2008-9
835 Francisco Street (8th and Figueroa, Downtown LA)
This is the largest NYE party in Los Angeles. Each of the heated big top tents will feature different types of music for different tastes. This year’s lineup includes a DJ set by Moby, Benny Benassi, Dirty South, Mark Farina, Mickey Avalon, Destructo, Dyslecticspeedreaders and more. In between the big tops a Ferris wheel and carnival games will provide outdoor entertainment.

The Queen Mary New Year’s Eve
The Queen Mary, 1126 Queen’s Highway, Long Beach, CA 90802, at the south end of the 710 Freeway, on the water.
The annual party in Long Beach is all over the ship. Your ticket will get you admission to the ship, fireworks and access to seven entertainment venues including four live music venues and a DJ dance club.

Universal City Walk’s New Year’s Eve Countdown Bash
Universal City Walk at Universal Studios Hollywood
This annual event is free to the public. The event features live music and DJs beginning at 9 pm, and fireworks from 2 ends of the street at midnight. General parking is $10.
